The Symposium 2017 of the Medicus Mundi Switzerland Network highlighted the complexity of the NCD epidemic. Determinants of NCDs are of social, economic, political and environmental nature, resulting in a growing burden - especially in LMICs - that can no longer be out of priority. Only with a multidimensional approach this epidemic can be tackled. Countries must urgently take action in order to achieve the reduction of NCD deaths by 1/3, as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aims. The presentations at the MMS Symposium demonstrated approaches and examples of how the increasing burden of NCDs can be addressed. The main challenge that remains is the implementation of NCD policies. Therefore the civil society plays a crucial role in advocating for the implementation of policies in order to tackle the NCD epidemic.
