Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute: Health Technology and Telemedicine Unit

"The Health Technology and Telemedicine Unit (HTTU) of the Swiss Centre for International Health at the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute is a centre of competence in the field of technology management in health care. The Health Technology and Telemedicine Unit is mainly oriented towards international development efforts in low income and transition countries, but also provides services to various institutions in Switzerland and the European Union. We focus on technology and know-how transfer through systematic assessment, appropriate solutions, process and system optimization including human resources and institutional capacity building. Beside consultancy services we manage a number of long term projects in various countries.

Our Unit provides assistance in health systems planning and project implementation with a special focus on physical resources, process optimisation and the introduction of information and communication systems.

Based on our technical and managerial expertise and our extensive implementation experience of projects in partner countries we are able to offer a wide range of services. For all activities the interdisciplinary approach of the SCIH guarantees optimal interfacing of our engineering expertise with that of other disciplines such as epidemiology, health economics, pharmaceutics, reproductive health, etc."

Our main services focus on:

  • Specific consulting services including situation analysis, feasibility studies, needs assessment and strategic planning.
  • Comprehensive project/programme management including relevant analyses, project design, project implementation support, organisational development, programme and project evaluation as well as accompanying operational research. Strengthening and optimising healthcare technology planning and management is our main vocation.
  • Procurement services for health care technology including relevant supplier surveys, technology analysis, tendering, transport and installation and commissioning. We advise on additional services like spare parts and consumables, training of engineers and users, maintenance services etc. to ensure sustainability. We aim to find the optimal match between specific requirements and items to be procured.
  • Education and training for human resources development in health technology management and ICT in Health. Teaching programmes are tailored to specific groups of professionals (managers, engineers, health workers, etc.)."
