Background of HIV and AIDS Award 2010
The international community agrees that the Millennium Development Goals will not be achieved without ensuring universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Underlying social and economic factors such as poverty and gender inequality contribute to both HIV transmission and poor sexual and reproductive health. The overwhelming majority of HIV infections are sexually transmitted or associated with transmission during pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding. Women and young people are hardest hit since women now account for nearly 60% of HIV infections in sub-Saharan Africa and young people aged 15 to 24 account for an estimated 45% of new HIV infections around the world. Linking and integrating SRH and HIV is therefore essential as it increases people’s access to a range of information and services that affect HIV outcomes.
The Catholic Organisation for Relief and Development (Cordaid) and partners reward leadership on the access of women living with HIV (of all ages and girls) to SRH services in the “global South” by awarding two prizes of €10,000 - one to a Community Based Organisation and one to a Faith Based Organisation. Cordaid and partners are seeking nominations from Community Based Organisations and Faith Based Organisations committed to supporting women living with HIV and girl’s empowerment to access SRH.
