Tönisvorst, 7 September 2017.Last Friday, the German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel visited our headquarters and warehouse. The conversation focused on crises, wars, drought, and other disasters in Africa. During his stay, which took one and a half hour, he also had a look into the warehouse of action medeor. There, he was primarily interested in a shipment for South Sudan supported by the Federal Foreign Office, which is currently in prepartion.Sigmar Gabriel was impressed: "The work that action medeor does cannot be appreciated high enough.“

Therefore, we would like to give you, too, a brief insight into a few of our current activities:

South Sudan

Since 2011, we have worked together with different partner organizations in South Sudan to provide the people with medicines and medical supplies through our partners’ health facilities. Among other things, we have sent a shipment with basic equipment to a hospital in Wau in May. Further aid shipments went to Tonj, Gumbo, and Maridi recently. Currently, we are preparing to provide more medicines and medical supplies to eleven health facilities in the regions Lakes, Warrap, and Western Bahr-al-Ghazal in a joint project with the German Department of Foreign Affairs. The first delivery with a volume of 64.4 tons will leave our warehouse in a few days. The shipment contains therapeutic food, antibiotics, analgesics, and antimalarial drugs.

Uganda

We are currently planning to provide medicines for South Sudanese refugees in North Uganda.

Yemen

This year, action medeor has sent shipments with antibiotics, infusions for cholera treatment, other essential medicines, and medical supplies to Yemen. Further aid supplies for our partners in Yemen are currently being prepared to be shipped.

Iraq

We provide our partner organizations with urgently needed medical aid for refugee camps and mobile clinics in Northern Iraq. These shipments mainly contain medicines like analgesics, antibiotics, cardiovascular medicines, medical supplies like dressing material and syringes, blankets, and diapers.

Somalia

Local partners in Puntland and Somaliland received medicines and medical supplies from action medeor. People who had to flee of the drought are being treated in mobile clinics in camps. Near Mogadishu, two of those clinics offer basic health care and examination for signs of malnourishment. Strengthening the local health system in the Banadir region and improving food security in ten villages in the Hiraan region present the objectives of two additional projects.

Kenya & Democratic Republic of the Congo

Supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Federal Foreign Office, we aim to improve the access to health care for refugees in the region. In several projects in Eastern Congo and the North of Kenya, we focus on maternal and child health. Other project activities include information and education campaigns, the procurement of medical equipment, consumables, and medicines, and the general support of mobile health care in remote areas.

Update: Haiti & Guatemala

Currently, we are monitoring the situation in Haiti and Guatemala very closely. We are in close contact with our local partners and check what help is needed on the ground. We cannot estimate the damage Hurricane Irma is doing in Haiti yet. We also do not know exactly about the impact of the earthquake off the coast of Mexico on the population of Guatemala.
