10 years of MDGs: Progress to date and the road ahead

Basel, 3 December 2010. Adopted by world leaders in 2000, the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the most broadly supported, comprehensive, yet specific development goals the world has ever agreed upon. If these goals are indeed achieved by 2015 as planned, world poverty will be cut by half, tens of millions of lives will be saved, and billions more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the global economy. Today, after two-thirds of the time has passed, it is time to take stock of proven initiatives and to discuss action for the road ahead. With only five years left to achieve the MDGs, what is needed more than ever is a new kind of cooperation whereby different stakeholders combine their specific expertise, experience, resources and networks to work together in good faith.
