What is Medicus Mundi International?

Medicus Mundi International (MMI) is an international Network of non-governmental organizations (NGO) and itself an international NGO (legal status: association) in official relation with the World Health Organisation. The association is seated in Tönisvorst, Germany, with a secretariat in Basel, Switzerland.

The aim of the MMI Network is the promotion of health and health services for the most deprived, especially in developing countries, with respect for the unique value of the human being, as an individual and as a member of the community.

Medicus Mundi International has over 40 years, via the Network members, initiated long-term sustainable health care projects. The network is independent from any particular religion or political ideology. The members of the Medicus Mundi International Network cooperate with many local governmental and non-governmental institutions in the spirit of partnership and lay particular emphasis on training and capacity building.

Medicus Mundi International supports basic curative and preventive activities, which are Primary Health Care (PHC) oriented, in order to establish a health care system that is in harmony with other activities in the field of agriculture, sanitation and education, being sustainable in the local socio-economic system.

Medicus Mundi International members support projects through personnel assistance (health experts), financial assistance (capital, drugs, equipment, etc.) and professional advice (research, evaluation, supervision).

Medicus Mundi International members provide emergency assistance preferably when the calamity strikes an area where they are lready engaged and when this aid offers the perspective of structural improvement and the beginning of a long-term health care programme.

Medicus Mundi International supports the activities of the Network members and promotes the cooperation and exchange of experiences between them and the international development organizations. MMI reinforces the consciousness-raising of the public.
